How to Be Happier at Work

So much of our lives are either going to work, working or thinking about work. If that is the case, then it makes sense that we should try and enjoy it instead of making it bearable. Having worked in a variety of organisations (some of which I did not like), I have learned some lessons. You may have heard some of this before, but I know that there are certain lessons that need to be learnt and if that means repeating some stuff then so be it. I mean am not saying that by following this will make all your problems go away, but it may well give you a new view on things.

  • You know that idea you keep thinking about? What about that hobby people keep complimenting you about? What about turning that into a business? Imagine getting paid to do something that you enjoy!
  • If having your own business is not your thing, then think about your qualities and your dream job (be realistic, I mean chocolate taster is great but c’mon!). Is there a match? If not, then think. Do you need to study? Get more qualifications? Then do it!
  • When you do land that job, familiarise yourself with the workplace. Make sure you know where things are and who the key people are to talk to. Do not be afraid to ask questions.
  • Try and keep the rules of the company e.g. using phone and/or email for personal use. Breaking the rules is not only stressful (as you try to hide it) but, if found out, could lead to disciplinary action.
  • Avoid gossip at all costs. It has a nasty way of coming back on you. If possible, try and avoid office politics, it is highly unpleasant. Make friends but do not become a sycophant.
  • If you have a long commute, make the most of it. If you can make mental (or physical) notes on what you need to do and how you need to achieve then relax - put your MP3 player in and listen to some music or read. You will be in a better frame of mind when you get in to work.
  • If you do not use public transport, try and use the opportunity to get a little exercise in – release those feel good hormones! This will put you in a very good frame of mind.
  • Make sure you eat a healthy breakfast before you leave. You are no good to anyone if you are either unconscious (because of low blood sugar level) or grouchy because you are hungry. When you get to work, keep hydrated. A loss of 10% of hydration can reduce mental capacity by up to 60%.
  • When its lunchtime, use the opportunity to go away from your desk. Take a walk outside, do some window shopping, sit in the park. It will clear your head and lift your mood.

I know that there are those who are looking for work and for whom any job will do. Some of these still apply. Most of it is about having the right attitude, when you have that everything else will be easier to follow. I am not saying that this is an exhaustive list or it is perfect because people and circumstances are different. However, there may be some things there that you may not have considered and if I was able to help one person through this, it would have been worth it.

Although this is not the current economy in which to switch jobs or to reject any reasonable job offer, finding work that you are passionate about is the REAL way to find satisfaction and happiness in work, Because this is not an option for everyone, at least find a hobby or after-work activity that you are passionate about.

These are excellent tips. I/O Psychology is an important area of research. It is not always possible to leave your personal problems at home, so the best you can make the experience at work, the better. Well done!

A great read as usual. I was never happy at work in advertising, and that's why I'm now self employed. If I'm not happy with the job I can always blame the boss! LOL

Hey that made a great read.
